You may have been looking into all the various ways to grow your digital presence, and you may have come to the realization that it’s not as simple as you thought it might be. There is a lot more to digital marketing than actively posting to your dental practice’s social media accounts, website, or monitoring/responding to various reviews. When a practice comes to realize how much really goes into their digital presence, they often turn to an agency that specializes in dental marketing. You may already have an awesome website, one to be proud of, but what is missing? You may not currently be aware of where your website’s traffic is coming from, what parts of the site they are really focusing on, or how often they are coming back, and so on and so forth. To continue the growth and success of your site, it’s important to have this data that will tell you all about your visitors. One reason that it’s important is because if you don’t know where the success is coming from, you won’t know what to modify during updates and you won’t know specifically where your site could use improvements. This is where analytics will come into play in helping you manage your online presence and understand your website’s audience.
Let’s start with these very beginner steps to Google Analytics…
Installing Google Analytics
The very first thing you will need, is a Google Analytics account. If you already have a Google account for your practice, that is set up for your other Google apps, such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, YouTube, Google+, and so on, then you should go through this account to set up your Google Analytics. It’s important that you use your practices’ specific Google account, or create one for it. If you go through an employee’s account then if for some reason you lose that employee, they could take all your data with them when they go, and you will have to start from scratch.
Setting up your account
Head over to the Google Analytics page, and click the sign into Google Analytics button. You will then arrive at a page that will describe the next three steps you will have to take in order to move forward. These include: 1) Sign up for Google Analytics, 2) Add tracking code, and 3) Learn about your audience. You will then fill out more information on another page after you are signed in.
Installing your tracking code
After the various steps, you will need to click the Get Tracking ID button. After agreeing to the terms and conditions, you will then get your code. Every page on your website must have the installation of your Google Analytics’ code. How you install the code to your site will depend on the type of website platform you are using. If you are using WordPress, you can use the Google Analytics by Yoast plugin to easily install the code, regardless of the theme you are using. Or, you can manually go into each page and add the code into the head of the page. If you have a website that is built via HTML files, then you will go to each page and add the tracking code before the </head> tag. For other types of platforms, it is best to contact an agency for advice.
Setting up goals
If you head to the Admin link at the top of your Google Analytics home page, you will be able to adjust the setting for your Goals, under your website’s View column. By using Goals, Google Analytics will be able to track when something important happens on your site. You can click “New Goal,” and customize the important goal for your Analytics, or if you prefer, you can use one of the options they have for you, if it is applicable to your site.
Viewing your Google Analytics data
Once you start using Analytics and begin receiving your user’s data, you will be able to learn about your website’s traffic. Now, every time you log in to your Google Analytics’ account, you will be shown your Audience Overview report, and you will be able to start analyzing the data of your website’s traffic to better implement your various digital marketing strategies.
